Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making the Union Street Re-Striping reality! What started as a demonstration has successfully been implemented into an actual re design of Union Street. Through this re-striping, we have added approximately 20% more parking, a bike lane, and calmed the street by reducing Union Street from 3 lanes to just 2. The Union Street Re-Striping Project is an example of the power of community to implement change. Business owners and residents came together in 2012 to contribute input and ideas to developing the West Side Revitalization Plan. The Plan emphasizes the importance of investing along the West Side’s commercial corridors and serves as the foundation for the community’s efforts to create a “Main Street” concept for Union & Lincoln Streets. In 2014, a community volunteer group launched the Better Block event, which demonstrated the new configuration on Union Street. The event attracted hundreds of people to two blocks of Union Street and continued to grow through 2016. “Better Block was a community event that visualized the changes we wanted to see for Union Street,” said Sarah Lester, Director of Cornerstone West CDC. “For three days in August, people walked to Union Street, they dined outside, and business sales went up.”
